What is VoIP?
As the name suggests, Voice over IP (VoIP) delivers voice communication and multimedia sessions (such as video conferencing) over IP networks. This means people can use the internet as the transmission medium for making phone calls. Consumer examples of this include Skype and WhatsApp calling.
VoIP technology can also be leveraged to enhance traditional PBX solutions while delivering modernised, flexible communication services over IP infrastructure
How does VoIP work?
VoIP uses codecs (programmes that compress data to enable faster transmission) to encapsulate audio into data packets. These packets are transmitted across an IP network and then decompressed using codecs at the other end of the connection.
By eliminating traditional telephony infrastructure (think copper-wire landlines), VoIP reduces network infrastructure costs and lets companies use their internet connections to deliver an integrated voice and data experience to employees.
What is the difference between VoIP phones and normal phones?
A VoIP phone system requires an internet connection to make and receive calls while traditional phone systems use PSTN (public switched telephone network). Even though both provide platforms for communication, ‘normal’ business phones are limited by analogue capabilities while VoIP services provide organisations with comprehensive digital offerings that can scale according to their requirements while delivering superior voice quality.
What features does a VoIP system provide?
VoIP ensures your business no longer needs telephone lines and third-party phone service providers. The technology works with all major PBX systems, across any network infrastructure. This means an effective reduction in your call rates when you switch to a VoIP service provider in South Africa.
An organisation can easily port its number to a VoIP environment and use it from anywhere in South Africa whether on or off their corporate network. This means that employees are not stuck to the business phone system in an office, instead they can use their home internet service (or their mobile phone to create a wifi hotspot) to access their business voip phone service.
In addition to voicemail, call forwarding, call hold and transfer, and call recording capabilities, VoIP systems can also deliver automated attendant functionality. This feature answers all incoming calls and sends them to their desired extension using call routing rules. With remote working becoming a way of life for many, this feature can be a significant time (and cost) saver to ensure employees are always contactable.
Additionally, a VoIP provider can deliver a unified communication experience that integrates audio conferencing, video meetings, and messaging in a central environment. Whether for internal or external use, this unified communication delivers a far more effective way of engaging with employees and customers using the environments they are comfortable with than traditional phone systems.
